Four songs, delicately delivered…
Conor Villagers

Clash is pleased – as pleased as a website made of various bits of assembled code can be, at least – to premiere the first Deezer Session of 2014: a special four-song set by Villagers, recorded in London.

Deezer’s stated aim for 2014 is to bring their users more of this content, to bring listeners closer to their favourite artists. This stripped-back performance from an acoustic-wielding Conor O’Brien and a minimal keyboard accompaniment sets a precedent for what’s to come: brilliant acts, arresting footage, must-see material.

O’Brien performs three songs from Villagers’ second LP, the Mercury Prize-nominated ‘{Awayland}’ (9/10 Clash review) – ‘In A Newfound Land You Are Free’, ‘The Waves’ and ‘Nothing Arrived’. Also aired is a track from the man-and-band’s debut album, ‘Becoming A Jackal’, namely the set-opening ‘Set The Tigers Free’.

Says James Foley, head of editorial for Deezer UK and Ireland: “Villagers’ Conor O’Brien is one of the best Irish songwriters of his generation, and this is demonstrated to devastating effect in this Deezer Session. These songs sound every bit as powerful when reduced to the bare bones. We’re delighted to be able to give fans of the band the chance to witness their unique brand of literate folk in this incredibly intimate setting.”

The four tracks can be streamed via Deezer at the bottom of this page, if you’d rather hear but not see (whatever takes your fancy – it’s your time). For more Deezer Sessions material, with the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Lorde and Phoenix, pay a visit to the app, here
