Maribou State – Chris Davids and Liam Ivory – grew up at opposite ends of a tiny village.
Each obsessed with music, the pair somehow managed to evade one another, to grow up in solitary, and entirely separate, worlds. That is, until they went to university in Leeds – brought together by the city's incredibly fertile electronic music scene, the aspiring producers swapped ideas.
Fluid electronics matched against avant hip hop beats and lush, often challenging samples, Maribou State was born. Working with Counter Records, the pair released their debut album 'Portraits' earlier this month.
A gorgeous, continually fascinating release, one of the high points found Maribou State facing off against vocalist Pedestrian. 'The Clown' is an enthralling calling card, with Gang Colours now stepping in on remix duties.
With the slumped percussion, blissful textures and piano flourishes the track could almost emerge on the Erased Tapes stable, but there's also a clear nod towards hip hop's spirit of adventure.
