Tyla has been training for this moment her whole life. As a kid, she and her siblings would sing every Sunday, learning music by copying the sounds they would hear from their stereo.
With Indian, Zulu, Mauritian, and Irish heritage, this Johannesburg wonder wants to draw together all different aspects of her life into her sound. As a result, you can never tell where the 21 year old star is going to land – drawing on club vibes, Millennial R&B, gospel, and more, Tyla is blessed with the kind of virtuosity some established artists work their entire lives to grapple with.
Currently in the studio with UK rap icon Tricky – amongst others – as she pulls together her debut album, there’s a lot to come from Tyla; and it begins with ‘To Last’…
A beautiful example of restraint and release, the bubbling amapiano rhythm shimmers with a palpable sense of energy, while her soulful vocal offers a full-scale confessional. Using the soundscape as a bedrock, her powerful voice croons: “You never gave us a chance, it’s like you never wanted us to last.”
Sharing similarities with artists as disparate as Jorja Smith and Aaliyah, Tyla is determined to walk her own path.
Tune in now.
