Ghent is – on the surface – an unlikely hub for dance music.
A tidy, immaculately pieced together Belgian city with a health student population, it can nonetheless boast to changing the course of European club culture in the form of esteemed techno powerhouse R&S Records. Ten years ago, though, they managed to do it again.
Back in 2000 – when disco was a dirty word and all things mnml reigned supreme – Eskimo Recordings introduced themselves to the world. Sitting somewhere between disco, house, rock and 80s electro the label began releasing cuts that were impossible to define and difficult to ignore.
Infectiously funky yet with a very modern, European style Eskimo boasted that each track contained "100% Pure Emotion". Gathering their finest output from a decade of exploration, the label recently pieced together a 5xCD box set which goes some way to proving that claim.
A wealth of fantastic music, 'A Decade Of Eskimo Recordings' tracks the whims, pleasures and seductions of the Belgian institution. So when Eskimo handed us something special for Track of the Day, who were we to refuse? Drop Out Orchestra are a pair of funky Swedes operating on a retro-Futurist plain.
All 70s glitz and glamour matched to ultra-Modern production techniques, the duo specialise in joyous, end of the night styles anthems – 'Sun Machine' is a case in point, with the name pointing towards the DJ booth as the source of inspiration. diskJokke stepped in on remix duties, with Eskimo housing the extensive – nigh on seven minute! – remix… which can now be yours for the price of a download.
