NIKI is busy making history.
The first Indonesian artist to play Coachella, she’s signed to powerhouse imprint 88Rising. With a global fanbase at her feet, the pop talent was on the cusp of an international breakout moment, before deciding to turn inwards, looking once more at her motivations.
Debut album ‘MOONCHILD’ may have been an astonishing success, but NIKI wanted to look back, re-capturing the thrills music gave her as a child. New album ‘Nicole’ is the end result of this process, and it lands on August 12th.
Viral smash ‘Every Summertime’ lit her way, with NIKI returning to the R&B and indie-folk cuts she adored as a teen. New single ‘High School In Jakarta’ is both a lyrical and musical sign-post, with its cutting nostalgia – the past isn’t all we remember it, after all – etched against Millennial production tropes.
An astute and often moving offering, NIKI crafted the single alongside Jacob Ray, dipping into the R&B playbook – think Cassie, Destiny’s Child – to achieve that intoxicating sound.
The video embodies that high school aesthetic, following a troubled NIKI through her daily life.
