David Ivar is perhaps best known as one half of Herman Dune, a group whose idiosyncratic, ever-evolving sound has gained a cult audience.
Last year, though, the singer felt the need to try out some solo ideas. Black Yaya was born, with debut album 'Black Yaya' set to be released on March 2nd via City Slang.
A curious, idiosyncratic affair, the songwriter displays some admirable imagination. Clash recently spoke to the artist about his cultural tastes and obsessions, and we're delighted to now unveil a new video from Black Yaya.
'Glad Tidings' is a curious, witty, whimsical piece of music, and comes backed with some typically daft visuals.
Directed by Black Yaya and Frank Fellous, Ivar mused recently: "'Glad Tidings' is a song I wrote from a dream, the dream had its own narrative, I just had to make a song out of it. On my last tour I started using the sunblock I use for bodysurfing as some kind of stage make-up, which made me look a bit like Michael Keaton in Beetle Juice I thought. I really liked that make up thing, something I had never tried onstage and that gave me some kind of a feeling of strength…"
"I wanted to use it in the video for 'Glad Tidings', maybe because there is a nightmare aspect to it, and also because the lyrics reference the Tim Burton movie for a second… "
Check it out now.
