Track Of The Day 29/8 – Everything Everything

Cough Cough

Everything Everything were always aptly named.

The group refused to lay down barriers, drawing influences from across the musical spectrum. With the release of their debut album ‘Man Alive’ in 2010, Everything Everything seemed to mark themselves out as one of the most exciting – and confusing – bands in the country.

Fast forward two years and one Mercury nomination later. Everything Everything have spent a year working on new material, only settling down into the studio routine in February. But how do you follow an album which accepted… everything?

The first clues are in. New track ‘Cough Cough’ received its first play on Zane Lowe’s Radio 1 show last night, with the video promptly hitting the net moments after.

It opens with layers of percussion, drums battering into each other before Jonathan Higgs’ falsetto bursts through. ‘Cough Cough’ is somehow less linear yet more coherent than their debut album, with Everything Everything de-constructing their own de-constructed take on pop music.
