It’s no secret that Irish rap is having a moment. With the likes of Kojaque and Jafaris making their impact internationally, the bar has been lifted, with a new generation of voices stepping in to make themselves known. Dublin-raised Sweetlemondae offers something different – she can only be herself, and that’s what makes her stand out from the pack.
Citing Coi Leray and Little Simz as influences, she grew up around the church but it took Nicki Minaj’s explosive ‘Pink Friday’ to truly turn her head. During the pandemic she started to take her rapping seriously, utilising pre-made YouTube beats and uploading the results to YouTube.
Each drop went viral, with Sweetlemondae able to speak to fans in a language they could understand. Freshly signed to Irish label Diffusion Lab, new single ‘It’s Alright’ is a colourful point of introduction, and the start of something bold and colourful.
Playful yet charismatic, ‘It’s Alright’ comes straight from the heart, a message of uplift and positivity. She comments…
”It’s Alright’ I think is one of those songs that you can play when you’re feeling low. I wrote this song to remind myself that no matter what I’m feeling I will come out the other side of it. Life is not stagnant and that everything is ever-changing therefore, no matter what you are going through it will pass and you may not feel 100 percent but you will be okay.”
