Elizabeth M. Drummond knows that art doesn’t move in a straight line.
Take songwriting; the germ of an idea may be apparent from the first session, but where a song ends up could be crucially different from where it begins.
The songwriter’s debut EP ‘Congratulations’ is incoming, marked by creative dexterity and a willingness to accept inspiration wherever it can be found. Out on crucial new talent hub Young Poet, the project is led by gorgeous lead single ‘I Tried’.
On the surface, it’s a pensive slice of indie-leaning pop music, reminiscent on places of Phoebe Bridgers, or even Clairo. Yet the slumped beat nods towards hip-hop, with Elizabeth M. Drummond fusing disparate elements to craft something multi-faceted and mature.
She comments: “This song started with a lo-fi hip-hop loop which I played guitar over. I think I wrote and produced this song in its entirety in one day, which is rare, but also necessary for me in recent years. I will often abandon something if I don’t finish it very soon after starting.”
“Again, this song is just a reflection of how I was feeling after coming out of a relationship that had run its course. I have to thank my dear friend Guy Tarento (Angus1) for pushing me to finish the song and the production on my own. I would never have released it without his insistence.”
Tune in now.
