Put Your Collar Up

Imagine having members of Grizzly Bear, Iron & Wine and more drooling over your songs, but still being able to walk the streets of Manchester totally unrecognised.

Well for Marc Rigelsford that's not a dream - it's a reality. A DIY pop wunderkind, the songwriter is currently using the Magic Arm moniker as a means of spewing out his elegantly hewn mini-masterpieces.

New EP 'Put Your Collar Up' is a good entry point. Opening with surging strings - all staccato notes against the simplest of piano tones - the title cut then falls into a gentle, lilting psychedelic groove.

Marc Rigelsford treats his vocals, with the phasing effect giving his voice a watery, rippling effect. By the the time Magic Arm introduces the brass section, you're convinced that this could well be the most out-there artist British pop has produced since Gruff Rhys.

“It looks at starting an album from scratch and being daunted by the endless possibilities, directions and ideas,” Rigelsford explains, humbly. He definitely has a point - 'Put Your Collar Up' feels like a three minute aggregation point, ideas shooting in and out like electricity on a microchip.
