Bess Atwell veers between expansive songwriting, and rather more personal artistry.
Perhaps that's in part due to personal circumstance. The majority of her debut album 'Hold Your Mind' was written in the south downs, far away from the bright lights of the glaring city.
The recording process, though, took place in London, and provided a rather different atmosphere. Influence-wise, Bess admits to a fondness for Bon Iver – but she resolutely treads her own path.
“I realised that I desire to express a universal feeling, as Bon Iver does, but that I could do so without sounding like him. That’s really what I learned from him. I write all the time now, because I’m not comparing myself to anybody else.”
'Hold Your Mind' arrives on July 1st, with Clash able to premiere new cut 'Resolution'. Deftly poetic, the soft, lingering arrangement provides plenty of space for Bess Atwell's wonderful voice.
