Track Of The Day 18/4 – Rae Morris

This Time

The piano seems to have rather fallen out of use in pop circles.

Sure, it could never compete with the chutzpah, the sheer cocky strut of the guitar but the likes of Paul McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Wonder and countless other managed to notch up hugely successful albums by tinkling the ivories.

So why not now? Well, it seems that a revival could be on the cards. Tom Odell stole the Critics Choice Award at the BRITs this year, and the piano charm is set to be joined by Rae Morris.

A shy, unassuming artist hid beneath curl after curl of brown hair, the young Blackpool singer is very definitely her own creation. Starting out at the smallest of shows, Rae Morris quickly garnered major label attention with her pitch perfect voice and delicately wrought songwriting.

As she told Clash recently: “I was doing a gig one night, and all the labels were there. But then I went back to college the next day, sat in my English lit class, and thought: ‘How is this significant anymore?’ I still can’t believe it, to be honest, but I think I made the right choice."

She could well be right. New EP 'From Above' is set to be released on Monday (April 23rd) and might just mark the point when Rae Morris became something of a household name. The production is crisp, and – if we're honest – her voice has rarely sounded better, with Rae Morris displaying an edge, an emotional bite that some of her contemporaries lack.
