Track Of The Day 18/2 – Petite Meller

'Baby Love'

Pop should be colourful; it should be absurd, it should fizz and crackle with energy.

Petite Meller makes pop music. She's proud of it, too – it's there in the vocals, in the lyrics in the manner in which she presents herself.

New single 'Baby Love' is an explosive piece of gospel tinged pop music, with just a hint of African influence in the percussion.

For the video, Petite Meller decided to pay homage to this, travelling to Kenya to shoot the accompanying visuals. Let's allow the singer to introduce the project herself…

"When we got to Kenya I saw Hadija, a beautiful young girl with dreams of becoming an actress. Hadija was just hanging on a porch and gave me a look that seemed to say 'I'm everything'. I immediately knew it was her I was looking for.”

“In the video I follow Hadija's character into the desert, she uplifts me from my sorrows and directs me towards joyful happiness which exists in the eyes of the rest of the children such as Charlene who plays the sax, and the WayoWayo Dance Group who bring life to its essence with their addictive rhythm and joy.”

“My small creative team and I usually source non-actors for our visuals, so we get a more 'real' feeling. It's always fun to think that there are people somewhere in the world who still don't know they're going to be in my video one day."
