Cole Bleu dares to be different. The Stateside-born, Liverpool-based artist played the Great Escape at the weekend, dazzling all those present with her precocious brand of alt-pop. Aiming to make each performance feel like a narrative, she draws on classic late 90s cinema to make her point.
New EP ‘Crushed’ lands on June 16th, while her latest sizzler ‘IS IT COOL 2 BE FRIENDS?’ is online now. From the crunching guitars to the peppy vocal, this feels very much in that late 90s lane – think Olivia Rodrigo or even Garbage at their most pop-oriented.
Out now, ‘IS IT COOL 2 BE FRIENDS?’ builds on this pop culture fascination, drawing lyrical viewpoints from all-time cinematic favourite 10 Things I Hate About You.
Instantly catchy, the song is about loosening the grip of past trauma, navigating your way out of bad memories. Zoning in on teenage relationships, Cole Bleu seems to find the courage to stop worrying, and let life take its course.
Speaking about the track, Cole says…
“This song is about being in an overly romanticised high school relationship. It was supposed to be over from the beginning because it was never real in the first place. I always struggled with relationships at that time because I wanted everything to be the ‘be all and end all’, and it turns out a lot of guys don’t think like that.”
Tune in now.
