Track Of The Day 15/11 – Tatyana

'Hold My Hand'

Tatyana is ready to feel something. Her education – musically speaking – has been a long time coming, her teens spent in Russia, Holland, and Singapore, before studying music at the prestigious Berklee College.

Returning to London, her debut album was co-produced by Metronomy’s Joe Mount, an experience that helped forge her vision, allowing Tatyana to grapple with the challenges of a full length.

But that was then, and this is now. New single ‘Hold My Hand’ inaugurates a fresh era, blending the physicality of the club experience with her own distinctive, avowedly left-field take on electronic songwriting.

Reminiscent of Tirzah in its staunch originality, the potency of the electronics seems to accurately mimic shifts in the body – the opening feels like an athlete putting themselves through their stretches, before darting into long sprints, her creative opening out into daring leaps and jumps.

Out now on Sinderlyn, Tatyana comments…

‘Hold My Hand’ is inspired by club music (Marie Davidson and Syclops were two big inspirations for this track), I sampled and cut up a bunch of delayed vocals I had recorded through my Eventide TimeFactor pedal, and the arpeggiated bass and the relentless, distorted arp (recorded on the Korg Arp Odyssey) were two key musical motifs that propel the song forward.

Thematically, the song deals with how a simple gesture like holding hands can be interpreted, is it reserved for true intimacy or is it casual? The question “why do you want to hold my hand?” Is a stand-in for the deeper query of “what are we?” that we’re often afraid of asking in the alienating landscape of modern dating.

A terrific piece of electronic music, Tatyana’s new single comes with some Andy King directed visuals – tune in now.
