As the old saying has it, you can choose your friends but you can’t choose family.
Pop music is littered with feuding siblings, ranging from the Davies to the Gallaghers – hell, even the Everly Brothers’ perfect harmonies masked years of discontent and mutual loathing.
So we can approach The Family Rain with a little caution. Three brothers, the trio operate from their basement, locking themselves away at the family home in Bath to work on their music.
The results, though, might just be worth the risk to familial relations. All fuzzed up blues guitar and scorched vocals, The Family Rain have a distinctly late 60s feel – think Cream’s odd pop moment, or the more restrained outbursts from The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
There are a lot of classic influences on show, but The Family Rain manage to impact a sense of personality to proceedings which is difficult to deny. Lead cut ‘Trust Me’ is a case in point – there’s cheekiness, cockiness on show which is resolutely youthful, allowing their songwriting to crackle with a rare energy.
Out on November 19th, The Family Rain will toast its release with a number of shows including a trip to Cardiff’s always-essential showcase event SWN.
