Imagine owing your roots to a country which no longer exists.
Born in what was then called the U.S.S.R., that's the fate which surrounds Igor Volk. Coming of age in London, his is a uniquely inspiring form of identity crisis.
Once a nu-rave foot-soldier with New Young Pony Club, the producer went solo last year with debut single 'Voice'. Taking his time, Igor Volk hooked up with producer Nick Phillips to build up new material, to track down new ideas.
Sure, the electronic hedonism of his previous group still shines through, but there are nods towards post-punk, towards the production sheen of Japan, towards the heyday of psychedelia.
New single 'Labyrinth' was unveiled by Lauren Laverne last week, and it's a curious, enticing pop nugget. Out on May 27th, the track is a heavier, more rock indebted sound than fans might be used to. But then, perhaps that's appropriate. Igor Volk is still exploring, still working out who he is – if 'Labyrinth' is anything to go by, though, it's set to be an inspiring journey.
Listen to it now.
Igor Volk is set to play London venue The Social tonight (May 13th) before heading to the Victoria on May 17th.
