Track Of The Day 12/9 – Sonnymoon

Nothing Thought

Let’s get this out the way first: Sonnymoon is a deadful pun.

But yet somehow, when you’re listening to the music this Boston duo create, it all makes sense. Gently surreal, playful, it’s a moniker which both makes instant sense and it is entirely nonsensical.

Dane Orr and Anna Wise make music which is essentially on the outer fringes of hip hop and R&B. Working with LA imprint Plug Research – once home to Flying Lotus, fact fans – the pair have completed work on an album which has a curious, foggy texture.

Self-titled, there’s an exploratory tone here which takes Sonnymoon from tender, Joni Mitchell style vocals to sloping, off kilter jazz tinged rhythms.

For our latest Track of the Day, though, we’ve gone for ‘Nothing Thought’. Emerging from colliding samples, the boom-bap beat feels tired, exhausted… knackered.

The textures are almost Eastern, with echo adding a rippling drone to the production while Anna Wise’ vocals are soft, tender.
