Track Of The Day 1/4 – Wild Swim

Another Night

Something grandiose, something eloquent…

Oxford's music scene has been in rare health of late. The city has coughed up the likes of Foals, Trophy Wife and Chad Valley of late, while last year's debut LP from Fixers had an engagingly fragile, other worldly quality. To this list we can now add Wild Swim.

The five piece might already be familiar, with last year's debut single 'Echo' introducing a curious, complex new band. Led by singer Richard Samson, there's a dramatic, operatic quality at show.

BBC Introducing staples, the band fit music in and around university – except for Samson, who is actually studying to be a tailor on Saville Row. With attention increasingly falling on the group, new single 'Another Night' arrives with almost perfect timing.

There's a quiet confidence here – from those initial plucked guitar notes to the soaring vocals – which suggests promise being fulfilled, early hype being justified.

Lyrically astute, Wild Swim seem to fit into that great British tradition of artful pop – from The Smiths to Suede, Bowie to Pulp. Out on May 6th via Believe Recordings, you can stream the single first on ClashMusic.
