Winter is a-coming in.
You can almost feel it. The clocks have gone back, and the hangover from Hallowe'en is beginning to recede. The days seem to get shorter, and you find yourself reaching for that old woollen scarf lodged at the back of the cupboard. Thankfully, we've got a few musical treats to keep the cold at bay.
The 1975 announced their arrival last month with the 'Facedown' EP but now the Manchester group are ready to take a turn for the dark. New EP 'Sex' – try Googling '1975' and 'Sex' – drops on November 19th, and finds the band moving forward at considerable pace.
The essential influences – shoegaze, a touch of electronics, fractured R&B – are all there, but the sense of bliss has been lost. Take 'Undo'. From its title alone you can tell that this isn't some summery hymn, with the wistful nostalgia of 'Facedown' turning into something more ominous.
Opening with the fluttering of synths and vocals almost submerged in reverb, 'Undo' starts in near ambient territory before the beat makes itself known. Stumbling along at almost funeral pace, 'Undo' almost seems ready to crumble into pieces but the sheer intensity of the production hems it in. Bewitching, ominous and certainly deserving of November's darkening days.
