Norman Jay – Good Times Turns 30

New compilation planned

Norman Jay’s ‘Good Times’ Soundsystem is set to turn 30 years old with a new compilation.

Norman Jay began his DJ career when still a teenager. Growing up in London’s Afro-Caribbean community, he was aware of the surrounding roots reggae culture but searched for something more soulful.

Forming his first soundsystem in 1979, the rig was re-constituted as ‘Good Times’ in 1981. Becoming a fixture at the Notting Hill Carnival, Norman Jay’s open minded music policy changed the event forever.

Keeping his finger on the pulse, Norman Jay has moved through jazz-funk, soul, disco, hip hop and more. Becoming a globally recognised name, his work within London communities earned him an MBE in 2002 – the first DJ to win this honour.

Later becoming one of the founding DJs on Kiss FM, Norman Jay was also instrumental in founding the influential label Talkin’ Loud with Gilles Peterson.

A fantastic advocate of club culture, Norman Jay is still going strong. Always uncovering new tunes, the soundsystem icon is set to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Good Times rig later this year.

To coincide with this event, Norman Jay has arranged a special compilation. Gathering together some of the classic cuts most associated with his sets, the DJ has thrown in a few rarities and brand new tracks.

The 30th anniversary compilation runs from skanking reggae to smooth soul. Amongst the tracks on show are Fries & Bridges’ ‘Forever This’, a 4×4 belter featuring an early vocal by chart superstar Cee-Lo Green.

Available on CD and LP formats, the compilation will include sleeve notes from respected journalist Lloyd Bradley – author of ‘Bass Culture’ – who interviews Norman Jay about his career and the ‘Good Times’ ethos.

‘Norman Jay presents Good Time 30’ is out on July 19th.
