We Were Evergreen – Towards

Smart pop that keeps its charm...

Having perfected their craft through several years spent releasing sporadic singles and looping round the toilet circuit wooing everyone whose path they crossed, French indie-pop trio We Were Evergreen finally proffer their debut album.

The headline must be the abundance of effortlessly niggling choruses boasting the lulling and unrelentingly optimistic vocals of Michael Liot, but there’s a lot more to this inventive band than the throwaway sugar-rush of a cursory listen might suggest.

Standout track ‘Daughters’ (remix premiere) is a wonderful model of the slow-build, while ‘Best Thing’ is an unashamedly joyous pile-up of ukulele, strings, piano and percussion.

‘Towards’ is smart pop that keeps its charm.

7/10
