Whether you file your music collection alphabetically or just spread it haphazardly around your bedroom/hard drive, it’s worth placing this Sheffield sextet’s sophomore effort next to Wild Beasts’ recent ‘Two Dancers’ album.
Both bands represent a growing school of northern English acts who eschew tawdry pub rock/Britpop revivalist tactics for a more sweeping orchestral sound. Like Wild Beasts, WTFS channel the delicate grandiosity of Nick Cave, the Associates and Richard Hawley, yet propel these influences with a post-rock urgency reminiscent of fellow Sheffielders 65DaysOfStatic.
A welcome return to intelligent songwriting and creative musicianship, without compromising on the need to rock out once in a while.
