Initially intended as a solo project, ‘Sukierae’ ended up twice as Tweedy’ed as Wilco, with frontman Jeff recording 20 songs in collaboration with his teenage son, Spencer.
Shorn of the alchemical band dynamic that, at times, distils Tweedy’s writing to near perfection, the rough edges are all on show on a sizeable and somewhat one-paced set that is still high on melody.
‘Summer Noon’ (video below) is a joyously light, airy presence early in the second half, while ‘Fake Fur Coat’ recalls the simple pleasures of Tweedy’s interpretations of Woody Guthrie’s work some 15 years ago.
Clocking in at almost 72 minutes, ‘Sukierae’ is a bloated, if lulling, listen.
6/10
