Thurston Moore – The Best Day

The closest we’re likely to get to a new Sonic Youth album…

Now decamped from New York to London, with ‘The Best Day’ Thurston Moore sticks to what he does best: expressive lyrics that don’t make much sense, ever-so-slightly discordant guitar melodies, and the occasional psychedelic freak-out jam (with James Sedwards of Nought here taking the Lee Ranaldo role).

This is the closest we’re likely to get to a new Sonic Youth album, and ‘The Best Day’ is a great reminder of what made that band so special. Tracks like ‘Speak To The Wild’ and the lengthy ‘Forevermore’ run the gamut from ‘The Diamond Sea’ beauty to ‘Expressway To Yr Skull’ wildness, all kept to rigid time by Steve Shelley’s effortless multi-cyclical kit-work.

7/10
