The Sugars – Black Friday

...they manage to sound somehow original

The Sugars are a three piece from Leeds though they don’t sound anything like their more famous contemporaries.

In fact they manage to sound somehow original despite the parts of the sum being so familiar. Take a vocal meld of Antony Hegarty and Marlena Shaw fronting a mix of Soft Cell and Spacemen 3 and try to imagine the opposite of what you might expect and you’re close. The dripping, squealing guitars contrast with the sharp, driving rhythm and the soulful vocal theatrics of singer Matt Bolton. Excellent, epic and moody, Black Friday hails the rebirth of baroque surf rock.
