‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ seems to be the theme running through ‘Mercury’, the first LP from producer James Hinton in six years. And that’s by no means a criticism. After the glorious results of previous albums ‘Nonfiction’ and ‘Potential’, few would change the formula.
Instead, Hinton cranks his knack for melody to new euphoric heights, with tracks like ‘Violet’ and ‘Bicameral’ destined to rattle around brains for days after. ‘Balm’ is a standout too, as Hinton leans into introspective territory via acid gurgles and delivers eyes-closed, melancholic bliss.
