What might seem at first encounter to be just another EDM record gradually reveals itself to be much more. It’s all in the combinations Teengirl Fantasy employ: pin-sharp, digitised beats live alongside ethereal chillwave synths that all bleed into one another’s halo of reverb. Then, kitsch keyboard sounds that recall ’80s dance outfits like Nu Shooz are added to this unlikely cocktail. What perhaps shouldn’t work entirely does, helped in no small part by guests such as Panda Bear and Romanthony (the vocalist on Daft Punk’s classic ‘One More Time’). Melodies that burrow under your skin and up-to-the-minute production make ‘Tracer’ a record to savour.
