Sunday and first act of the day we caught was Kentucky’s mighty My Morning Jacket on at the criminally early 2.30 slot in the Pet Sounds Tent.
Riding high on the reception of another great album, the awesome ‘Evil Urges’, the band took to the stages with no concessions to the mid afternoon time slot or criminally half full tent.
Frontman Jim James was full of his usual showmanship, appearing in a cape which he posed with Dracula style and wearing, what he went onto explain, a ‘belt of international peace’ which would help us all feel a little bit more peaceful and hopefully help solve the world’s problems. So, it was fair to says he was on fine form.
As always his voice was astounding, tackling the band’s loftier moments with ease and with a power few singers can bring to the live arena. Playing a selection of material from ‘Evil Urges’ alongside older classics they started at full pelt and turned things up a notch from there. The words ‘high octane’ come to mind.
Highlights included James’ knee slide and accompanying scream for the middle eight of ‘Wordless Chorus’ and the closing ‘Mangeetah’.
