Swans – The Seer

A bold and stark opus

The second record by the New York post-punks since they reformed in 2010, ‘The Seer’ sees the now-fifty-eight-year-old Michael Gira on tyrannically capricious form. ‘The Wolf ’, for example, is an almost a cappella spoken-word piece that lasts a minute-and-a-half, while the title track which follows it is a thirty-two-minute-long collage of weirdness that would test the patience of Gandhi. Still, it’s a bold and stark opus worthy of attention, if your attention span is long enough.
