“Trap”. Not only the physical location of a drug-peddling vicinity in America’s deep south, but a state of mind: hopelessness, futility.
Having already produced for Arizona iced tea #sadboy Yung Lean and Rome Fortune, Louisiana’s James Prudhomme marinates his beats as Suicideyear in promethazine to configure an icy, minimal rap aesthetic that paints themes of love and loss.
Providing a comfortable home for this austere and digitised beatwork is Oneohtrix Point Never’s Software imprint and, while the trap state of mind may be a bleak one, it makes for a stunning piece of music; ‘Hope Building A’ (below) being a glistening peak in this tear-stained melancholia.
