STARS - The Five Ghosts

Stars trade much of their cinematic atmospherics for simpler, punchier electro-pop on their fifth album, in turn, watering down their very creative aesthetic - and ultimately, their appeal. Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan’s dual vocals just about transcend their own combined cheesiness on opener ‘Dead Hearts’, though ‘I Died So I Could Haunt You’ and ‘The Last Song Ever Written’ don’t fare quite as well.

‘Wasted Daylight’, a sugary, ambient number, offers a particularly sublime performance from Millan, as does ‘He Dreams He’s Awake’, of Campbell. However, these two are the fairly obvious highlights in an otherwise misfired effort.
