Spiral Beach – Voodoo

Brash, bouncy fairground music

Professed fans of New York gypsy punks Gogol Bordello, Canadian four-piece Spiral Beach let the sounds of the Romany carnival wheedle their way into their brilliant debut single, Voodoo.

It’s brash, bouncy fairground music with flecks of ska and Northern Soul like Blondie on Blackpool Pier. Being a funfair naturally there is a sinister side and front-woman Maddy Wilde’s lyrics – “I’m still tied to a chair” – raise the suspense. The music builds to bleary peak before a sparking chorus, complete with David Byrne like “hah”’s and a black magic hook, brings an exhilarating climax to a top pop fairground attraction.
