Marvellous and magical
Shugo Tokumaru - Port Entropy

Language being the barrier that it is, it’s hard for foreign-speaking musicians to break through into English-speaking countries - for some reason, we far prefer trite, meaningless platitudes we understand than the enigmatic linguistic delights of distant lands. It’s a shame.

The fourth album from Tokyo-born singer songwriter Shugo Tokumaru might be entirely in Japanese, but the world he creates through quirky little off-kilter fairground ditties such as ‘Straw’ and ‘Tracking Elevator’ is marvellous and magical. This is cheerful childhood innocence come to life - candy-floss dreams and rainbow rivers. Let’s just hope he’s not singing love songs to rapists and mass-murderers.
