A wonderful album.
Shearwater - The Golden Archipelago

The third section of the band’s triptych of albums that began with ‘Palo Santo’ and continued with 2008’s ‘Rook’, ‘The Golden Archipelago’ continues the themes of man’s impact on the environment with the focus falling this time out on man’s existence on remote islands.

And given songwriter’s Jonathan Meiberg’s well-worn passport, visiting many remote islands as an ornithology student, it’s an area he has experienced first hand. Opening with a snatch of the anthem of the Bikini Atoll islands on ‘Meridian’, it’s a low key, affecting start to the album. Meiburg’s voice is a wonder throughout, wonderfully fragile on ‘Hidden Lakes’, tearing it up on ‘Corridors’. A wonderful album.
