This compilation of producer James Welch’s first couple of EPs demonstrates two distinct strands of his sound. ‘Tourist’ is fairly mellow folktronica – all jingling bells, plucked strings and found sounds. Sonically, there’s some obvious (but valid) comparisons to be made to ‘Rounds’-era Four Tet. The tracks meander on a little, but are compelling all the same. The second-half, ‘Sleeper’, has a more straightforward techno vibe. They’re more focused and to the point. Welch spatters his fidgety metallic rhythms with day-glow strobing synths and fragmented vocals. It’s not quite an essential purchase, but this set marks Seams out as a promising new producer.
