Scanners – Lowlife

Pacey and unrelenting

After the opening lines that ask “are you ready to die?” and the first rake of sorrowful strings, Scanners’ second single was always going to be an emotive affair.

Vocalist Sarah Daly lays it on with the chorus “this is a low” but her unusually direct and open voice like Edie Brickell without the smugness, makes her sound like she means it. The music is pacey and unrelenting; a gloomy but almost uplifting pop song with cries of hope and pain surging through each voice and instrument. If Scanners were an Emo band, they’d be the genre’s acceptable face.
