Quavo – Rocket Power

A bold if imperfect summation of grief...

Quavo has been through a lot. One third of Migos, the group took their Georgia sound to the globe, becoming 21st century hip-hop icons. The loss of Takeoff – his nephew, but in truth more like a brother – must have hit him hard. Taken from him in unbearable circumstances, he’s opted to stay out of the private eye, working on grief by focussing on the craft.

New album ‘Rocket Power’ is his first since that moment of tragic violence, and it operates as an expunging of emotions. It’s the sound of someone trying to piece his body and soul together in the public gaze, while also working out where to take his solo voice. It’s worth noting that mere weeks before the incident, Quavo and Takeoff had released a fantastic collaborative record together – this solo outing wasn’t on anyone’s minds.

As such, it’s valuable, but not perfect. ‘Rocket Power’ represents a cleaning of the slate, a necessary step forwards. The highlights are worth anyone’s time: ‘Patty Cake’ is one of the final recordings Quavo and Takeoff made together, while two Future appearances – particularly on ‘Turn Yo Clic Up’ are exhilarating.

Often the album fulfills most emphatically when it works against type. ‘Galaxy’ is a dose of light and energy, while the sheer darkness of ’11.11’ makes it a must-listen.

An album of contradictions, ‘Rocket Power’ seems to find Quavo using the studio both as a place of sanctuary, and as a venue to cut loose. The title track, for example, is a profound meditation on grief, a daring, bracingly honest discourse. The reggae-tinged finale ‘Greatness’ however is sheer cartoonish fun, a slice of ultra-colourful entertainment. Go figure.

In the end, ‘Rocket Power’ isn’t perfect, but it’s definitely rewarding. For fans, it’s simply emotional to hear Quavo in the studio again, doing what he does best. After unimaginable grief, he’s able to look to the future – and that in itself is worth cherishing.

7/10
