The first UK album release from Cincinnati’s Pomegranates is an utter delight.
Wrapped up in some concept album guff about a time traveller, and joining the dots between the playfulness of Brian Wilson and the intellectual amiability of Vampire Weekend, ‘Everybody, Come Outside!’ is a hook-laden romp to banish the winter blues. The rollicking ‘Southern Ocean’ – all boogie guitars and chants of “Atlantic / Pacific / Indian / Arctic” – and the worldly bossa nova of ‘Svaatzi Uutsi’ are a sugar-rush of sunny delight.
However, the whispered lullaby ‘Sail (Away With Me) and the weary softness of ‘I Feel Like I’m A Million Years Old’ suggest subtle depths to this wanton deliciousness.
