The spirit of 1979 burns bright

After the pristine pop of 2008’s ‘Little Death’ debut, the Reading quintet have edged towards the dark side on this red-blooded - and bloody good - follow-up. Their melodic radar is now cloaked in spiky postpunk with lead single ‘Come To The Bar’ the most immediate track - all fidgety synths, a Motorik beat and a left-hook of a chorus. While a hefty melody digs ‘Cold Black Kitty’ out of a lyrical faux pas, ‘Little Gun’ is a timeless two-minute shard of pop rebellion that would have likely had John Peel drooling. The heavier, dirtier mood suits these Pirates - the spirit of 1979 burns bright.
