A blindingly good debut
Odonis Odonis - Hollandaze

From the first few bars of the opening title track, this Toronto trio get right in their listener’s faces. Indeed ‘Hollandaze’ is deliciously brutal; hissing, feral guitars and a pulsing drum machine marking out the territory once occupied by Steve Albini’s ferocious Big Black. There is little let up, both ‘Busted Lip’ and ‘Seedgazer’ contain killer hooks shoe-horned into grimy, proto surf-rock. Yes, the Odonis Odonis sound is hardly revolutionary, but singer-songwriter Dean Tzenos’ homage to Albini and bands like pre-grunge luminaries Tad is utterly exhilarating. By the closing track, the nagging subversion of ‘Tick Tock’, victory is assured. A blindingly good debut.
