His previous church-recorded album was cavernous. By accident rather than design this is in direct contrast. Trying to dampen the sound of his piano playing in the evenings he put a layer of felt in front of the strings, then went further and inserted microphones inside. We hear his breathing amongst the ambient sounds of the piano’s action, the pedals, creaking floorboards; the effect of which is unbelievably intimate. Melodic, melancholic, at moments almost celestial, it’s simply stunning work.
