They’ve been gigging and recording for nigh on ten years now, but ‘Extra Wow’, their first album for Warp, is also the first that’s likely to make a dent on the mainstream.
A good thing too, as this is pretty damn impressive. There are echoes of other experimental noise-rock types: HEALTH and Liars, plus label-mates Battles. But there’s more going on here than just reverb and distortion. ‘On And On’ cruises along a propulsive motorik beat, ‘Make It Gold’ builds into an intense shamanic drone, and there’s a curious dubby skank to the aptly named ‘Big Bounce’.
More than just the sum of its influences, ‘Extra Wow’ lives up to its title. Very very nice nice.
