These days everyone seems to be making beat driven pop music, from indie king Beck to left-field beatmaker Daedelus.
So it’s surprisingly un-astonishing to find that the new single from noisy art rock outfit My Morning Jacket sees them abandoning their usual distorted riffs and feedback wails in favour of crisp melodies and driving rhythms. The thumping bass line and relentless beat create a strange atmosphere for the mysterious twanging guitars and Jim James’ echoing voice. It is dense downbeat pop music – like Chris Isaak fronting New Order – to which My Morning Jacket bring their usual high level of quality.
