One of these gems is actually track two from the explosively cinematic new EP from Glaswegian post-rockers Mogwai. Im going to leave you hanging and you can find out when you buy it. Now theres a little encouragement.
Play the title track opener as loud as you can! Its one of those songs you imagine seeing in an epic zombie film, as an aerial camera pans over the streets and you watch an army of newly converted flesh eaters wander the streets eating cats and… stuff. It oozes massive electronic and metal influences that power out through disgustingly heavy riffs! Martin Bulloch drums through some titanic beats to assist the aforementioned riffs which have, by the way, now broken your pitiful speakers. Shame on you.
The second track brings you back down to earth, now our aerial camera is flanking over the streets the morning after and observing the carnage caused by the undead. Dead cats everywhere. You listen to this and reflect on the first, not because this track lacks anything at all. But it seems to assist the comedown and ease you back into a relaxed state. Preparing your cochleas for the subtle emotion of the final track.
Devil Rides picks up where track two left and gently cradles your frail body while cult figure Roky Erickson charms you with his heartfelt lyrics. For those of you unfamiliar with Roky, his life story involves the usual rock’n’roll lifestyle, throw in some electro shock treatment, some aliens, some more drugs and bang! You have yourself something worth checking out. His rough edged, crest-fallen vocals really add sincere character to the looping and mellow strumming of Mogwai’s music.
Batcat is a must have.
