Former frontman Tim Smith has left Midlake and taken the musty veil of 2010’s ‘The Courage Of Others’ album (Clash review) with him.
What remains is a new Midlake, a brilliant Midlake, full of punchy psychedelia, fuzzy synths, massive harmonies and drumming like you’ve never heard from them before.
But it’s still Midlake, full of winding melodies peppered with flute, picked guitar and experimentation. Every track is sensational, from the ’70s baroque splendour of ‘It’s Going Down’ to the thumping percussion, synth buzz and melancholic vocals of ‘This Weight’.
Antiphon is going to divide opinion, but give it a chance – it might just be the best thing they’ve ever done.
9/10
