MEN – Talk About Body

Too little variation or innovation

Much-hyped Brooklyn band MEN style themselves as an art/performance collective designed to explore the live potential of dance music. That may be very well onstage, where the members – who include Le Tigre’s JD Samson – dress up in ridiculous costumes and bring their disco dance robotics to life, but outside of that aesthetic context, the repetitive beats and seemingly endless loops become, on the whole, tired and tedious too soon. ‘Boom Boom Boom’, an upright post-riot grrl anthem, and the relatively gentle, tender ‘Simultaneously’ are two highlights that stand out from the mire, but elsewhere, there’s too little variation or innovation.
