It’s time to consider Murphy as someone great

At what point did self-proclaimed “boogie” merchant James Murphy become one of the great songwriters of his generation?

Probably around the time this song slinked from the middle of LCD Soundsystem’s second album Sound of Silver. Suddenly the man who made his reputation with loud, dance floor-friendly indie-tinged anthems is producing achingly pretty musings on love, loss, time, friendship and the way life’s consequential moments come wrapped in the banality of everyday existence. And he does all this in six shimmering minutes without the aid of a chorus or even a proper hook. It’s time to consider Murphy himself as someone great.
