Junip – Fields

Earthy, enigmatic and possessed

Despite getting together over a decade ago, this Scandinavian trio had only released an EP prior to their ten-year hiatus. In the interim the drummer studied art, the keyboardist taught and built a home studio and in the case of lead vocalist Jose Gonzalez, released two very successful solo albums. So, was it worth the wait for them to reconvene? In a word, yes. ‘Fields’ is a magical, mesmerising collection of repetitive East African inspired grooves, rhythmical Witchseasonish folk jazz and somnambulant soul, sung in Gonzales’s familiar yielding tones. Earthy, enigmatic and possessed of a refreshing lightness of touch.
