Johnny Flynn – Leftovers

...there’s plenty to like about Flynn

Earnest troubadour in the making Johnny Flynn returns with another credentials-proving song.

In attempting to connect with his folk music’s roots, Leftovers – like previous single The Box – deals with vagrancy and the value of a simple life as his character requests “a dime for some bacon rind”. Once more it’s a tad too polished to feel real but there’s plenty to like about Flynn. His simple, engaging voice, firm grasp of folk rhythms and a nod to Van Morrison in the shivering string arrangements ought to ensure we hear better from him in the future.
